Police in Onitsha not living up to the challenges of crime wave
A letter to police diary
BY ENGR. SILAS ANOND

Along Awka road, between Inland town police station junction and DMGS round about, two robbers operating with okada snatched a hand bag from a woman, after shooting a harrasing gun. The incident happened at about 11.30am and police were on duty at the two junctions mentioned above. The two points were very close, within eye reach, yet no effort was made by police, even after hearing the gun shot.

This kind of robbery, especially those that operate with okada, are very, very rampant, happens almost on daily basis and police check points are every where in Onitsha. One wonders if the police are actualy there to combat crime or just there to extort money from innocent people. Are these robbers operating with authority from police? how do they overcome the several check points with their guns?.

Police in Onitsha devotes more time in intimidating and extorting money from innocent citizens. At the check points police will be busy trying to trace
a typesetting error on your engine or chasis numbers, in all the documents they will request from you, and if they are lucky to find any, they will tag it an offence and compel you to settle them (the bargain starts from 15,000 or more) after which they will advise you to go and correct the error.

Please let the police in Onitsha be more serious in fighting crime. I want to suggest the police in Onitsha should carry out a massive and honest stop and search operation, especially on the okada and their passengers. I believe it will help to fish out the criminals. Thank you Mr. Kelvine Ugwu and the IGP for this programme.
