CLO Hails The Appointment of Ogbonnaya Onovo

CLO Hails The Appointment of Ogbonnaya Onovo As The Inspector General of Police And Warns Against Politicization of His Confirmation By The Nigeria Police / Federal Executive Council.

The Civil Liberties Organization Anambra State Branch received with utmost joy the appointment of Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo as the Acting Inspector General of Police by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The appointment coming barely 12 days after the CLO petitioned Mr. President on the glaring marginalisation of the South East and canvassed for the elevation of Onovo as the Police boss is a testimony to the fact that the voice of credible Civil Societies and public opinion remains a potent force in a democracy.

While thanking Mr. President for one bold step taken to recognize merit and federal character, we also warn that under no circumstance should Onovo’s confirmation by the relevant authorities be subject to further politicization.

This warning is necessary because of the influence of some northern power brother that are still bent on “fronting” for one of their own so as to scheme out Onovo for the second time.

We also wish to inform Mr. Onovo to always bear in mind that his elevation as the Police boss is a serious call to do duty. Instead of celebrating, he should mourn first like the people of “Nineveh” in the Bible so that God will give him courage to face the uphill task ahead.

As the first man from the South East in the history of the Nigeria Police to assume the position of inspector general, he should dare to be different and strive to make history as the first police boss to return the police to its original duty of crime fighting, security and maintenance of law and order.

Security remains a crucial basis for assessing the template, which guides investment-making decisions; Nigerians therefore, are eagerly looking forward to see a truly reformed and rebranded police devoid of political inclinations, lip service commitment to duty and a culture of impunity.

Onovo can do it, the shortcomings of the past four inspector generals he had worked with can be an added advantage for him.

Signed:

Comrade Aloysius Attah

Chairman CLO

Anambra State Chapter.
